How to enter a KO Tournament

Send an e-mail to and include:

  • your full name
  • your e-mail address
  • the Ratings Group you want to sign up for (see below)
General Information KOs are generally played in 3 rounds of 2 game matches, one as white, one as black. Winners advance, defeated players are "knocked out". * Round 1: Eight players are paired in two-game matches. * Round 2: The 4 survivors are paired in two-game matches. * Round 3: The 2 finalists are paired in a two-game match. Note: The winner of the final round is the tournament Champion. Their name will shine forever in KO 'Hall of Fame' Both games in a 2 game match must be played concurrently! Failure to do so will constitute a time violation, and may incur a forfeit. If a match is drawn: the player with the lower rating on the Pairing e-mail for that round, advances. Further KO information is available at the KO webpage: * KO Tournaments - currently available for sign up * KO-1050 (up to 1199) ******************* 1. 17072 840 Johnson, Aaron 20~1~45 USA 2004.09.13 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. SWISS Tournaments:

last update: September 30, 2004

* George Agnew Senior TD
* Raouf El-Messiry TD
* Ben Newman  TD
* Marcos Varela  TD

To sign up for OPEN groups send an e-mail to
and include the following:

* Your full name
* Your e-mail address
* Your IECC rating, if known

These OPEN events are open for all ratings / open for all IECC members. New groups
will start with every 24 entrants. Four single Rounds each starting after a
previous round is completed.

General information
* Time control: pace at least 10 moves @ 30 days, but faster is better (to avoid
  too long waiting times, longterm games will be provisionally adjudicated for
  next round pairings!).

* These are NOT KO-Tournaments! - All Participants have to play all rounds.

* In round 1 (partly in 2) bigger rating differences between opponents are
  'normal'. For the weaker player an interesting challenge (and stronger players
  should remember, when they were beginners, and be ready to defeat their higher
  rating).

* Leave of Absences - Each player will be granted requested time off not to exceed
  30 days in each round of the Swiss. Additional time of up to 15 days per Round
  will be subject to approval of both the TD and the opponent. Granting of that
  extra time will depend on the status or rate of progression of that match.
  Players taking "silent" or non-approved time off will be subject to forfeit by
  the arbiter.

IECC THEMATIC CHALLENGES:

last update: September 30, 2004
Your Thematic TD's are:
  • Craig Brophy
  • Pete Raynolds
  • Grahame Booth

To request a match send an e-mail to
and include the following:

* Your full name
* Your e-mail address
* Your IECC rating, if known
* Name of Thematic (see list below)

WE WILL ATTEMPT TO ASSIGN OPPONENTS WITHIN A 400 POINT RATING DIFFERENTIAL.
THE TD MAY USE HIS DISCRTION AND ASSIGN OPPONENTS WHOSE RATING DIFERENTIAL
IS BETWEEN 400 AND 500 POINTS. HOWEVER, IF THE OPPONENTS AGREE, THE TD WILL
ASSIGN OPPONENTS WITH LARGE RATING DIFFERENTIAL (ABOVE 500 POINTS).

This is a great way to explore openings you want to try Both players play a
game with White and a game with Black in the same Thematic opening challenge.

The waiting list below is split into two sections. The first section concerns
those opening variations which have at least one player who is waiting for an
opponent.

The second section concerns proposed openings that have not as yet a waiting
request.

We are open to all suggestions of any openings that are not published in this
list providing of course we can find the necessary number of opponents.

Abbreviated rules:
1. MEMBERS WITH UNEXPLAINED FORFEITS ON THEIR RECORD WILL NOT BE PERMITTED
   ENTRY INTO FUTURE THEMATICS EVENTS

2. Each player in a Thematic Challenge plays two rated games; one as White,
   one as Black.

3. All Thematic two game matches are open events.

4. Check IECC Bulletins/Guidelines for detailed rules.

5. In the event that 3 players sign up at once the TD reserve the right to
   change the 2 game matches to a Trio.

Here is the list of players currently waiting for an opponent. We certainly
are interested in adding any other opening variation to this list, provided
that there are enough players who are interested in playing a specific
variation.
